Le Guanahani Collaborates with Renowned Modern Artists

Graffiti artist JonOne and sculptor Richard Orlinski unveiled unique pieces created for Le Guanahani at the hotel’s 30th anniversary party

ST. BARTH, FRENCH WEST INDIES – Le Guanahani, the iconic resort located on its own private peninsula on the Caribbean island of St. Barth, honored the inventive creativity of contemporary art through a unique collaboration with two world-renowned modern artists: JonOne and Richard Orlinski. Inspired by the resort’s ongoing 30th anniversary year, the collaboration unveiled two striking works of art at Le Guanahani’s 30th anniversary party on November 26, 2016.

As anyone who pays attention to the art market knows, contemporary art is trending these days – as is the talent that creates it:

JonOne: An American graffiti artist who has lived and worked in Paris since 1987, JonOne has created a unique work of art for Le Guanahani at the event: an explosion of vitality and color offering a Dionysian celebration of lines enmeshed within a maze of visual and touch-sensitive explosions. Born John Andrew Perello to Dominican parents in Harlem in New York City, the artist tagged his way to fame in the late 1970s and in 1984 founded the graffiti group 156 All Starz – named for his street number – becoming Jon156 and then JonOne. Shifting focus to canvas without losing vibrancy and strength, he had solo and collective exhibitions, including a show in Berlin in 1990 that resulted in the auction of his work Balle de Match for the highest bid ever for a work of graffiti in France. Distinguished by the attention he brings to the agitation and flow of colors instead of figurative art, JonOne describes himself as an “abstract expressionist graffiti painter.” Since 2011, he has worked with the foundation Abbé Pierre in the fight against poverty, and in 2016 he earned France’s highest honor as a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.

Richard Orlinski: A believer that beauty can invert violence into positive feelings, sculptor Richard Orlinski has tapped this “Born Wild” concept to create a work of art in the signature colors of Le Guanahani, with two alligators fighting for the “G”.  Born in Paris in 1966, Orlinski began focusing on art in 2002 following a career in interior design and worked for two years before showing his first works in 2004. His success was instantaneous, resulting in showings at Art Elysées, the FIAC, and Art Basel. A supporter of all forms of art, Orlinski finds inspiration in the iconic popular imaging that follows his thought, incorporating simple yet strong figures that convey animality and wildness while preserving a sense of hypnotic beauty. He reaches spectators acting on childish impulses and archaisms, constantly challenging himself and innovating to create new light effects, sculpt new materials and test alloys. Orlinski’s works are found in collections around the world, and ArtPrice has ranked him as one of the top ten most sold French artists worldwide since 2011.

The party was held at Le Guanahani on Saturday, November 26, 2016. Along with the unveiling of the artworks, the festivities featured live painting by JonOne, crocodile-themed cocktails and the island’s most VIP attendees.
